CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO - "The dying city"
Almost suspended in mid air between the
Tevere and Lake Bolsena, at the border of Umbria and Lazio, Civita di
Bagnoregio, known as the dying city looms bifore us on a large spur of tufa
rock, and is almost an island in the middle of a fringed basin.
The
small city is infaxt perched on a cone of a tufa rock hinged on to a
clay base. I is actually water
and clay that condenns the historic
Civita much more then the earthquake of 1695 almost destroying it. The
ground started to crumble and give way one year later, hence the name
the dying city. |
